We Came As Romans

It's always something special when oversea's bands grace our soil, and  We Came As Romans were no exception!

We caught up with vocalist Dave Stephens at their show with AlesanaIwrestledabearonce and Glamour Of The Kill at the Electric Ballroom in Camden and had a chat about the tour and the band.

How are you today?
Good man!

How’s the tour been so far?
Ah it’s been awesome! Good dudes, good shows, it’s been a really good time.

We’ve got a fan question for you firstly. Josh wants to know how do you keep your growling persistent during live shows?
Just do proper warm ups, you got to be taking care of yourself, good diets. You can’t be getting hammered all the time and you gotta’ eat right, sleep well and you know, you can’t be screaming and yelling all day before shows, so just take care of your body and take care of your voice.

What’s been your favourite city/town to play in the UK since you’ve started coming over here?
London’s always awesome! I’m not just saying that cause were here today but London is a big city so you can always expect a pretty big turnouts and our fans here are really loyal to us.

What’s been the best show you have ever played since the band started?
It’s hard to say cause’ there’s just so many, but a really memorable moment for me back in Detroit about a year ago we headlined a place called the Crowfoot Ballroom and it’s a place I had bin to growing up, seeing all my favourite bands play there and it’s a pretty big room like a thousand cap room. We were playing the smaller room originally and then ticket sales went so well and then they moved us to the bigger room and everyone was like “No its not gonna sell out! Its not gonna sell out!” and then it ended up selling out and it was our first time in a bus and it was just a really memorable show for me. Probably one of my favourites.

Album 2 came out a little while back and for those who haven’t heard it yet, what makes it different from To Plant A Seed?
All in all it’s a little darker, To Plant A Seed didn’t really acknowledge that there’s any kind of negativity in the world, struggles or bad happenings and Understanding What We’ve Grown To Be, you know the world sucks sometimes and it talks about how you need to get over those things, to do whatever it takes to get through it and come out on the other side.

Obviously you’re all sitting in a bus for the majority of the time whilst on tour, so what music do you listen to on tour?
I’ve been all over the place lately man! Most of my music is like melodic hardcore and posi hardcore. One of my favourite bands is The Ghost Inside I love music like that! Lately I’ve been getting into slower stuff like Mumford and Sons, You Without You and even some jazz lately. So I’ve been kinda weird (Laughs). It’s just nice to come out of a  metal show and put something different in your CD player. I guess CD players are a bit out-dated now?

Moving on to some “fun” questions, something you’re addicted to is?
I’ve been really addicted to caffeine lately  (Laughs). I’ve been drinking like 3 cups of coffee a day; I’m just hooked on it! Probably not a good thing.

What’s your worst habit?
Probably caffeine, it was drinking but I quit that just recently, so now it’s probably caffeine!

Pet hates?
Every tour it’s different for me, last tour it was really annoying. We had a garbage can and everyone would put their garbage next to it so that was a pet hate! (Laughs)

Any embarrassing tour stories?
Yeah! I always tell this one and I always have a fear on stage because of this. We were in Florida and I said Georgia on stage for no reason, it was really embarrassing and now I always ask our tech before we go on stage like 3 times, “Okay where are we? We're in London right?” now I always have this thing in my head where I’m always doubting myself where we actually are! (Laughs)

When you all first met each other, what were your first impressions?
I think the funniest story is our bassist Andy. Because our old bass player was a really talented musician, but he was moving to Chicago for school and us being so young we couldn’t afford to be bringing him back and forth and he didn’t want to be going back and forth. So we went on MySpace and searched bass players and Andy was one of them that came up. I messaged about 10 different people that night asking if they wanted to play bass with us and Andy was probably the 2 or 3 that I didn’t want that badly like last choice (Laughs). He was the only one that responded then when he came out I was like, this guy isn’t a very good bass player at all, but he was a really hard worker and he learned how to play and perform. So we added him to the band and now he’s a very talented bass player.

The main themes for the records so far have been about positivity and brotherhood, do you think this is something that the fans connect with?
Yeah, I hope so, that’s the goal with it, we believe that if people are all good to each other  and cared for one another that things in this world would work a lot smoothly.

Back to the touring aspect, do you sometimes get fed-up of each other at times?
Touring is a rollercoaster, sometimes you’re on top of the world and others you just want to be by yourself play video games and relax. So the biggest thing for me is that there’s no privacy, unless you’re in your bunk, curtain closed, even then guys will come upstairs and open your curtain and mess with you. You never get any privacy and that can get on your nerves.

Tell us a random fact about the band?
When I started the band I played guitar! (Laughs) Then moved on to singing and keyboards and now I scream. Up until Kyle joined the band I just moved wherever they needed me to go.

What songs do you enjoy playing live the most?
Right now I’d probably say Mis//Understanding it definitely gets the crowd going and it’s one of our heavier songs so it’s more fun to play live!

What advice would you give to a band just starting out?
I always just tell the younger bands that are just getting their foot in the door, work really hard, always be respectful to pretty much anyone you meet. Fans, anyone you meet at shows, industry people, all the other bands, everyone’s in it together and you don’t want to be that band that everyone dislikes because you’re mean or rude. So work hard and just network as much as you possibly can.

What’s been your proudest moment in the band so far?
I have to say all the world travelling we’ve been doing. By this summer I’d have been to every continent apart from Africa and Antarctica. I think that’s just pretty amazing and the fact that we can afford to go to these places, afford to pay the bills of this, I think it’s all just pretty amazing that people know our name and music! It’s been quite a trip (Smiles).

What are your goals throughout this year?
We never take breaks, so were just going to keep touring as much as we can, keep writing, keep working hard. It’s what got us here, so that’s what we’re going to keep doing!
